The Mindset You Need for Saving Money

There are plenty of tips out there on how to save money, and many of them are useful ones, but it can be hard to stick to a budget in the first place. Sometimes this is because you have created a budget that is unrealistic, but other times, it is because you lack the motivation. In order to be a successful saver, you might want to think more deeply about your relationship to money and saving and what it all means to you.

Figure Out Why

Why are you trying to save money? Maybe it's because you've simply internalized the idea that you should. It's unlikely that you will remain motivated to save if you don't have a goal, whether that is buying a home, traveling for the long term, retiring early or anything else. Identify your savings goals, and make your budget based on that.

Money as Security

Some people save as much money as possible simply because they feel insecure if they do not. The problem with this is that there is usually not a sum that is enough, and if you are putting every cent that you can away in the bank instead of spending it on yourself or loved ones, this is an attitude that could cause problems in your relationships. It also has the opposite effect of making you free from money worries. It's smart to pay down debt fast, to put money into an emergency account and to save for retirement. It's also smart to learn how to invest, but money can't shield you from every type of hardship. If you are sensible with your money and well-insured, it's important to allow yourself some indulgences now and again.

Changing Your Relationship to Debt

Many people think of owing money as inevitable, and dutifully pay a small sum toward a credit card balance and other debt each month without thinking about how much this is costing them in interest. With the possible exception of your mortgage, debt is something you should work hard to get rid of. Some types of debt can seem overwhelming, such as student loan debt. However, you can change your relationship with your student loans by refinancing. This may lower your interest rate and allow you to pay off your loan several years early. Working to aggressively pay down your debt can lead you more quickly to financial freedom.

Savings as Freedom

The best mindset when you are working to save money is not one of fear but one that sees savings as freedom. This means a cushion that allows you to walk away from a job that you are unhappy with or to make a decision about major purchases based on the qualities you truly want instead of what you can afford. Diversifying your investments can help savings grow as well as keep them more secure since it means that even if one or more investments has a downturn, you have others you can rely upon. Saving is best done with a mindset focused on a healthy attitude toward money, a clear explication of your goals and an understanding of what money can and cannot do for you.
