Success on a Budget: How to Run a Business With Limited Staff

It is not very common for a company to start off encompassing a large staff. Not unless they were a pre-established company or have production needs for a vast number of employees. Also, many startups can not usually afford to hire more than a few essential employees.

Whether or not the number of employees is based upon affordability, today there are other issues to consider. While still facing concerns of the COVID-19 pandemic, many fear the risks that can come from having a large staff should the virus begin to surge again. There is also the issue of labor shortages. Many businesses are finding it hard to staff their offices.

So there are many factors like reducing overhead costs and limiting infection exposure that are encouraging many businesses to remain small in numbers. However, that doesn’t mean that the nature of their business does not require all the managerial methods that a seemingly larger company does. Just because the ability to produce their product does not need an enhanced production staff, they still may have a significant production output.

Despite size and production levels, there are certain services that every company needs to ensure that their business is conducted effectively and safely; services like accounting, marketing, IT, human resources, and legal. Depending on your business, there may be more necessary essential services, but these are common services that are usually universal for most businesses.

It sounds like quite a bit of personnel just in these few departments of services. So if you do not have the ability or desire to employ this amount of staff, what do you do? Fortunately, with so many companies doing business online these days outsourcing services has never been easier or more effective.

Here are some ways that you can keep your staff numbers to a minimum and still run a successful business.

Virtual Staffing

For years companies have taken advantage of virtual staffing, but it was usually considered for more temporary positions. However, as the pandemic forced companies to think outside the box, virtual staffing became part of the everyday workforce. It offers businesses the ability to hire vetted and experienced staff from all over the country to handle tasks without needing to step foot in an office space. Most companies have contractors that offer services like assistants, bookkeepers, social media managers, etc. So you can go to one company to hire staff to meet a variety of your needs with only the responsibility of a contract fee.

Outsourcing Services

Some services require experts in their respective fields that may or may not be needed on a daily basis. One service that is essential on a daily basis, especially if your business is being conducted mostly online, is a strong IT department. However, as mentioned above you may not have the space or capability to hire a whole department. Fortunately, there are companies that offer services that negate the need for an in-house IT department.

Companies like, JDE managed services, have experts in various fields of technology that can handle all of your technical and security needs 24/7, and usually at a lower cost than having your own department. Packages can be easily designed to meet your company’s needs.

Utilize Social Media

Since most companies are doing the bulk of their business online in today’s economy, your online presence is just as an essential service as any other in your business. While maintaining a healthy social media presence is time consuming, it is completely doable and usually a little or no cost to you. If time is of concern to you and funds are limited, think of hiring an intern. No matter what level they are at in their education, they have more experience handling online accounts and maintaining a social media presence than you could probably ever learn.

In today’s economy and the uncertain nature of the pandemic, it is probably wise to keep your company staff minimal. However, that doesn’t mean your business cannot continue to grow. The business world has had to learn to operate in a whole new arena and it is a learning experience for all to be able to adapt and continue despite what struggles we may face locally or globally in the future.
