How To Make Money Teaching Music

If you're looking for a new way to make money, have you considered using the talents that you already have? If you are great at baking cakes, why not start your own cake baking business? Maybe you are exceptionally fit and love working out so becoming a personal trainer is something you could work towards? For those with music bones in their bodies, teaching music could be a great opportunity to not only make some money, but to share the love of learning and instrument too. Let's look at how to make money teaching music

Teach Music Lessons

Traditional teaching of music is such a privilege. There are so many music teachers who still remember their students decades down the line. There are also plenty of musicians who still remember their teachers! You can make money teaching music in many different ways. There are parents of students who will pay you to give their offspring one-on-one tuition every week. They see this as money well spent because their child is learning a skill that will stay with them for life. Similarly you could offer group lessons. The price people would pay would be slightly lower however there are benefits of learning as a class too. Friends can be made, support can be given throughout the week in WhatsApp groups. Maybe even bands could even be created!

Schools also need music teachers to go in and teach students in music classes. You could go down the route of becoming a fully fledged music teacher, so you really would make money teaching music every day. You could work freelance and go into different schools every day. Maybe you could offer music classes during lunchtimes or after school. Perhaps that after school club could have different levels and you could team up with another teacher to make the most of that limited after school time. Very School of Rock!  The possibilities are endless.

Don't limit yourself to children though. There are plenty of mature people who would love to learn to play an instrument. They will likely have their own money to pay for their new hobby as well, so can invest in it with you how they see fit.

Teach Online Music Lessons

When the global pandemic hit, everyone jumped online and found new ways to be together without being in the same room. We can utilise this advancement in technology and make money teaching music online. No longer do lessons have to be in the same room. As long as you have a decent broadband connection, a good camera and quality microphone, you can teach someone online. They might live around the corner but they could live in another country on the other side of the world.

Zoom calls and video chat brings us closer together and allows us to teach people anywhere in the world. Teaching online also limits your travel and commuting time. Meaning you can probably cut the cost of your service, making it more appealing for people, because you can turn lessons around quickly. It could be a 25 minute lessons which would then give you 5 minutes to get ready for the next student. This utilises your time better, maximising your earnings from your time. No more sitting in traffic to get home, after going to someone's house to teach them the flute. You can simply complete your tutoring, log off the call and get on with your evening.

Sell Online Music Courses

Have you considered creating something that will make money teaching music whilst you're busy doing other things? If you have the talent, people will pay to learn from you. The thing is, you could create a course that people download or have access to once they've paid. This would give you money in the bank and the buyer the information they want. This could be an eBook type course which helps they learn the basics of guitar playing or piano. It could be more developed for those wanting more learning.

You could offer video content, with music to learn, techniques which they can go back to again and again. Maybe you can include access to a private Facebook group in the course, where you perhaps do regular Facebook live videos where you can teach or answer questions. The possibilities are really endless. Whatever you can think of and however you can dream of teaching can be done this way. Imagine waking up early to find that four or five people having signed up to your course. That could be a few hundred pounds earned whilst you are asleep!

Start A YouTube Channel

One of the ways you can promote yourself is by starting a YouTube channel. If you simply set up a camera and microphone and show videos of your talent, you can quickly gain an audience online. Selling shouldn't be your key objective here. Your YouTube channel can be a way to simply connect with people and gain a following. If you put adverts on your videos you'll be able to earn some extra revenue when people watch your videos.

Upload videos of covers. This means you can tag them with ‘Foo Fighters' for example which will expand your reach. Combine this with some of your own music to show your skill, personality and character. YouTube is one of the biggest search engines and people love discovering people playing music on there. You could even utilise the platform to host some of your video content for paid for courses. With the internet, people can learn from you, wherever they are in the world.

Sell Teaching Material & Resources

People love learning music. Even those who have been able to play instruments for years look online for sheet music that they can learn. You could sell that sheet music to people! If you have set up being a music teacher, you could perhaps put together an eBook and resources for others looking to step into this field. Knowledge is valuable so don't downplay the information you have in your head. Resources are solid gold and you can earn some decent passive income from them. All of these ideas will help you make money teaching music.

Sell Equipment & Instruments

When you get school kids signing up to learn the guitar, many of them won't have instruments. You will need them all to have their own, so could make a bit of extra money selling bundles of what they will need. Find decent guitars (kids will love them in their favourite colours!) at a good price and put a slight mark up on them to help you pay your bills. If you are knowledgeable about music, you could look for instruments selling online at less than what they are worth. if you know how much you could sell them for to private collectors, you could buy them, do them up so they are in top notch condition and then sell them on.

When you start looking at how to make money teaching music, you'll see that there are a lot of doors to push. Share your passion, teach those who want to learn and make some money too.
