Canon G7X Mark II Review | The Best Camera For Vloggers?

It’s been just over a year since I bought my first ‘vlogging’ camera. The Canon G7X Mark II. Since then I’ve gone onto try other cameras, and buy a second Canon G7X Mark II for my girlfriend Helen.

So, as I launch both the ‘Spend Money’ and ‘Youtube’ segment of this blog I thought it was about time I wrote a complete review of this very camera.

The Canon G7X Mark II is the premier 'vlogging' camera used by the likes of Roman Atwood and Alfie Dayes. However, has the rise to stardom almost killed the camera? I don't think so. Having compared it to a fully fledged DSLR with the Canon 80D I'd say this camera is the best compact film camera on the market right now.

In the mix of all the numbers there’s perhaps only one major thing I want to draw your attention to here…

There’s no audio input. Which means no rode or other external microphone. Although I am working on a micro usb to 3mm to label mic hack. The internal microphone is very good, it’s just not and probably never going to be the quality of an external microphone.

One item we’ve used to combat the external microphone situation somewhat in the meantime is a micro muff.

The Canon G7X Mark II has been designed with vloggers in mind. The forward facing flip-screen makes it super simple to find out what’s in focus while you’re filming.

The rubber grip around the front of the camera makes it super comfortable to hold in your hand while filming.

At the top of the camera you’ll find a dial enabling you to quickly shift between different exposure modes. As well as an exposure compensation dial. The design has made accessing these changes both quick and easy.

Both in photo and video mode I’ve found the Canon G7X Mark II to struggle with autofocus. Especially on fine or small subjects, even with macro focusing enabled.

As a vlogger this isn’t enough to put me off, however if I was just buying this camera for photo’s I’d find an alternative.

Value For Money

This camera is a great alternative to a DSLR. Unfortunatly it’s noticeably missing 4K filming which Canon seem to have held onto for a future upgrade.

Although it’s on the pricy side at £549 (RRP) I’d consider this to be the premier compact camera for filming. That’s coming from someone who has used this camera every single day for the best part of a year. It makes for a great ‘investment’ as you’ll struggle to find it discounted ANYWHERE in the world. Making the second hand market just as lucrative – for now at least.

If you’re looking for a cheaper alternative the only camera I could suggest in a similar field is the 2013 Sony DSCRX100M2. You’ll save around £100 (which in my opinion for the difference in quality isn’t worth it) it weighs 50g less, and has a similar image resolution (20.2 megapixels) and optical zoom (3.6x)
